Heal Yourself With Laughter - 2
Aug 19th, 2010 by Anjali Singla

Laughter is good for health. It can make you beautiful, increase the metabolism, builds up the immunity, releases the stress and so on.

Mort Walker, the famous American comic artist, says – “Seven days without laughter makes one weak.” Laughter is the sensation of feeling good all over. Laughter can do those things free of cost for which you are ready to spend millions. The benefits list of laughter is so long that you will realize that the only solution to the major and minor problems of life lies with you itself. Carolyn Birmingham says - “A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly, but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul.” So laughter is the healer of the soul. It is the brush that sweeps away the cobwebs of your heart and a soap that cleanses your soul. Let’s have a look at wonders what laughter can do:

Improves functioning of brain
Jan Karon says - “15 minutes of laughter is worth six hours of meditation.” It brings focus away from the negative emotions and improves alertness of mind. It is a great energy booster and also has a positive effect on memory, concentration power and learning capacity.

Social benefits
Laughter makes you a good human being. Greville says – “Man is the only creature endowed with the power of laughter.” So laugh and the world will laugh with you. Laugh with others and laugh at yourself. The well-known critic Thomas Szasz says - “When a person can no longer laugh at himself, it is time for others to laugh at him.” Don’t give others chance to make fun of you. I had a friend in college who was very fat. She never got depressed in any situation and used to say - “Look at my size!! Even the worst storm can’t budge me.”

Strengthens immune system
Laughter can boost your immune system by reducing stress and increasing white cells that attack cancer cells. One study conducted at the Indiana State University reported increased number of white cells in the blood of people who watched humorous video. Good laughter also cleanses and detoxes the body. Frequent bouts of laughter evacuate your lungs of more air than it takes. Thus, it can even fight the free radicals present in the body.

Builds positive outlook
Laughter is a shock absorber that eases the blows of life. It is a direct route to the soul. It doesn’t permanently solve any problem, but makes things more acceptable for a while. It changes our perspective and helps us view threats as challenges.

Find laughter all around you

No serious effort is needed to laugh. You can find laughter all around you. Join the company of light-hearted, amusing and fun loving people. Try to see the funny side of things. Even poor and worn out jokes, when cracked amidst a group of friends, can generate big laughter. Read comics, jokes, humorous articles, stories, etc. Nowadays, many comedy shows are telecast on TV, which can put you in uncontrollable fits of laughter. Many laughter clubs have been opened to bring laughter in the lives of people. First laughter yoga club was started in India by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995. Realizing the healing power of laughter, it has become widely accepted with over 6000 laughter clubs in 60 countries. Here, people come to join the mutual laughter and shed off their stress.

Laughter gives a spiritual relaxation. It is not only fun, but an expression of inner happiness. It costs nothing, but its upshots are precious. Laughter is like a vacation. It gives an instant lift to your mood. Anyone can laugh with no jokes, no humour skills. There is a famous saying, “Fake it, until you make it.” Laughter is more contagious than any disease. When you laugh into a group; it turns into a real laughter, until it becomes unstoppable from your deep within. So, if you want to be happy, then look happy and make others happy. Laugh and forget, don’t forget to laugh.
